Paul Mark Bergstrom of Greensburg, PA passed away on January 6, 2019. Paul was born on May 12, 1930 in McKeesport, PA. A child during the Great Depression, he nevertheless fondly remembered his early years for his large and spirited extended family and the vibrant working-class community in which he grew up. He labored on a Vermont farm during the Second World War and then as a steel worker at the National Tube Works in McKeesport. He also served two stints in the Army, including in combat during the Korean War. Paul primarily worked for Westinghouse Electric, initially in research laboratories, where he was awarded several patents, but mostly as a businessman in various locations in Western Pennsylvania as well as in overseas postings in Brussels, Paris and Madrid. Upon retirement, he remained active developing businesses and writing books. He was a master storyteller, world traveler (always in economy) and an avid golfer. To his everlasting joy, he met and married Eleanore Sheila Kuban of Munhall, PA in 1955. Baptized into the Lutheran faith, the greatest battle he ever won was to be accepted by her Roman Catholic parents. Paul and Eleanore's loving marriage lasted 52 years until her death in 2007. During that time, Paul and Eleanore raised five children; Karen Shackelford, Carl Bergstrom, Paul Bergstrom, Matthew Bergstrom (deceased) and Luke Bergstrom, providing them with much love and limitless horizons. He was a loving grandfather and great grandfather. In later years, he was grateful for visits and calls from his friends, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. At his bedside in his final days, his love was returned by Karen and her daughter Hilary; by Carl and his wife Melanie; by Paul, his wife Chris and his sons Matthew and Evan; and by Luke, his wife Alexandra and their son Christian. His granddaughter Elizabeth and son-in-law emeritus, Steve Shackelford, also cheered him with their communications during that time. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care he received during his last week in Westmoreland Hospital. His ashes will be interred next to his beloved wife and a memorial service will be held the second weekend of June at the family home in Greensburg, details will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would respectfully request that friends and family make a donation to Catholic Relief Services. Paul’s family has entrusted his care to the Pantalone Funeral Home, Inc., Greensburg.
