Dr. Petros N. Papas

GREENSBURG

Dr. Petros N. Papas, 93, of Greensburg, died Friday, May 1, 2026. He was born April 17, 1933, in Thessaloniki, Greece, a son of the late Nicholas Papanastasiou and Timothea Papanastasiou (née Euclidou).

After surviving the German occupation of Greece in World War II and the subsequent Greek Civil War, young Petros immigrated to the United States as a 16 year old. He attended Saint John’s Military Academy and subsequently the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). During his university years, “Pete” met and married the love of his life, Irene Papas (née Shultz). They were married for 65 years prior to her passing on October 2, 2020. In the first years of their marriage, he earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering also from IIT. He applied his passion for electrical power during a long career at Westinghouse Electric. After a soft retirement, he consulted for several manufacturing companies. Throughout his career he taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State and local community colleges. Pete was very committed to his faith. As a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Pittsburgh, he served on the Parish Council as President and Treasurer. Later as a member of St. Michael's Antiochian Orthodox Church, he served on the Parish Council and as Treasurer. In recent years, he was active in the St. Michael’s Historical Society, AMEN's group, Food on the Hill, served as a greeter and taught Sunday School. He also enjoyed hiking at Twin Lakes, his neighborhood, and in the woods of Pennsylvania. With all of his accomplishments, his family was still the most important to him. They affectionately refered to him as “The Patriarch”.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepmother, Meropi Papanastasiou (née Kostopoulou), his wife Irene Schultz Papas, his daughter Diana Roberts, and his brother Alexandros Papanastasiou.

His surviving children, Constantina Papas of Jeannette; son-in-law Thomas Roberts and “bonus daughter,” Anne Hensel, of Delmont; Nicholas Papas and wife, Patricia, of Houston, TX; Athena Conte and husband, Gregory, of North Chesterfield, VA, will all miss his overwhelming positivity and joy of life. He was known as Papou to Dn. Noah and Dr. Beth Ann Papas, of Pittsburgh, Philothei and Michael Feaga, of Round Rock, TX, Dr. Irene R. and James Nelson, of Austin, TX, Anna Conte, of North Chesterfield, VA, and Maria and Cade Scott, of Bolivar. Petros has nine great-grandchildren! They are Zoe, Maxwell and Lily Feaga, Anthony and Marina Papas, Rosemary and Juniper Nelson, and Nina and Sebastian Scott. He is also survived by his niece, Nicol Papanastasiou of Athens, Greece; and his nephew, George (Stina Sarapuu) Papanastasiou of Zurich, Switzerland.

Relatives and friends of Petros will be received Tuesday, May 5, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the St. Michael's Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1182 Ashland St., Greensburg, PA (724) 834-1311.

Trisagion Prayers will be held Tuesday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Church.

A funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 6, 2026 in the St. Michael's Antiochian Orthodox Church with Reverend Father David Hyatt, celebrating.

Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
