Daniel F. Zeglin passed away on May 23, 2026 after a courageous ten year battle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was born April 10, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant to the late Frank A. and Antionette L. Jagoda Zeglin.
Dan graduated from Hurst High School with the class of 1963. Shortly after graduation Dan enlisted in the US Navy where he served honorably through March 1967. His interest in science led him into the medical field working in multiple laboratory settings.
After discharge, he enrolled in the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia ultimately receiving his degree in Medical Technology graduating Summa Cum Laude. In order to fulfill his academic requirements, he was selected to complete a one-year Clinical Laboratory internship at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh's Oakland Section. Upon completion of the internship, he test proficiently with the American Medical Technologist and the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) and ultimately was liscensed to perform and result laboratory testing. At that point he was hired as a full time Medical Technologist in the Clinical Laboratory with the VA in Pittsburgh.
Dan spent the next 34 years at the VA serving in multiple capacities, the last being a Departmental Supervisor in the Clinical Lab. During this time period, he converted many based laboratory techniques to a Data Based Formats. With the introduction of the Liver Transplant Program at the VA in Pittsburgh in 2010, the second VA in the country at that time, he became an integral part of University of Pittsburgh Transplant Program led by Doctor Thomas E. Starzl.
He was very proud to have been a veteran and was able to give back by serving veterans throughout his career at the VA. Upon leaving Federal Service, Dan remained active in the Clinical Laboratory field, establishing and working in various smaller laboratories in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties.
Also, during this period, he spent a year designing and helping to build his and Carole's dream home. He was an owner and active member of a hunting camp in Elk County for fifty-six years, where he enjoyed many weekends hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. Dan was a life member of Hecla Sportman's Club and Standard Shaft Citizens Club, Western PA Conservancy, and a founding member of the Keystone Country Alliance in Benezette. He was a lover of all things Disney and went to the parks every five years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas Zeglin; and his most recent canine companion, Bailey.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-four years, Carole A. Stemple Zeglin; two children, Timothy Zeglin (Sarah) of Ligonier and Cristie Zeglin of Jeanette; six grandchildren, Maleshya, Ema, Anna, Luke, John and Kaleena; two great grandchildren Rose and David; sisters,Gina Kennedy (dec. Mike) of Kane and Monica Johnson (Bruce) of Greensburg and several nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Dan's P.C.P., Dr. Christopher T. Rihn and his staff at Westmoreland Center for Internal Medicine-UMPC for their clinical expertise, emotional support and sound advice.
We would also like to thank Fr. Steven West for his spiritual guidance and compassion during our trying times.
Relatives and friends of Daniel will be received Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Clement L. Pantalone Funeral Home, Inc. 409 W. Pittsburgh Street, Greensburg, PA 15601, (724) 837-0020.
Prayers of transfer will be said in the funeral home Thursday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in the Our Lady of Grace Church with Fr. Kenneth Zaccagnini, celebrating.
Entombment will follow in Mary, Mother of Mercy Mausoleum at St. Vincent, Latrobe.
