Clarence “Bud” Smail, Jr ., 81, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, August 01, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born October 25, 1936, in Buffalo, New York, a son of the late Clarence B.,Sr. and Dorothy Reffner Smail.  Bud graduated from Jeannette High School in 1954. He attended the University of Maryland and received his B.S. in Business Administration. He joined his father in the automobile industry in 1959 as a Lincoln Mercury dealer. He became C.E.O. of Smail Auto Group, growing the business to its current 10 franchises. He was involved in many aspects of the automotive industry including President of Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association, President of the Pennsylvania Automotive Association, board member of the National Automobile Dealers Association, and a member of the American International Automobile Dealers Association.  Through these organizations, he had the privilege of meeting many United States political figures including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, James Baker, and Condoleezza Rice. He received numerous awards throughout his career in the automotive industry including Time Magazine Pennsylvania Dealer of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Pennsylvania Automotive Association in 2014.  Bud loved the automotive industry mainly for the many wonderful people he encountered. He was a firm believer in supporting the community that you chose to live and raise your children. He served on the boards of The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, Westmoreland County Community College, The Westmoreland Cultural Trust, and the American Heart Association of Western Pennsylvania.  Bud loved spending summers with his family in Muskoka, Canada and the Florida Keys where he passed on his love of water activities and boating to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Katherine Ann Smail; and two brother-in-laws, James Leone and Daniel Painter.  He is survived by the love of his life, Ellen R. Leone Smail, who he met at Harrold's Junior High and has been married to for sixty years; three children, Kathryn Johnson (Ronald) of Sewickley, Mark Smail (Kelly) of Greensburg and Jeff Smail (Loni) of Latrobe; his German daughter, Heike Milbrodt (Direk) of Frankfort, Germany; his Jordanian son, Safwan Moubaydeen (Natasha) of Amman, Jordan; seven grandchildren, Megan and Christopher Johnson,Taylor and Marcus Smail, Jessica (Jamie), Jeffrey and Alexandra Smail; Safwan's children, Faisel, Heya, Sara and Mohammed Moubaydeen; two great granddaughters, Jacey and Kessa; two brothers, James Smail (Nancy) and William Smail (Rick), all of Ligonier; two sister-in-laws, Betty Painter of Greensburg and Mary Bloom (Joseph) of La Jolla, CA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Bud, Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Clement L. Pantalone Funeral Home, Inc. 409 W. Pittsburgh Street, Greensburg, PA 15601, (724) 837-0020.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday in the Our Lady of Grace Church, 1011 Mt Pleasant Rd, Greensburg, PA 15601.  Everyone please go directly to the Church.  Entombment will follow in Mary, Mother of Mercy Mausoleum at St. Vincent, Latrobe.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Bud’s memory to:  Parkinson’s Research at the Pittsburgh Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (PIND), Attention: Justin Meyer, PMHSF 3600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Attention: Tony Accamando, Veterans Cable Services Inc., 3591 Ridgeway Drive, Bethel Park, PA 15102.  Bud’s family has entrusted his care to the Pantalone Funeral Home, Inc., Greensburg.
